The City of Charlottesville is currently recruiting for the position of Firefighter. Candidates must be 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver's license, be in good physical condition, and agree to sign a "no smoking" contract. Position requires passing a written examination, and persons who pass the examination will be referred to the Fire Department for further pre employment evaluation, polygraph and background investigation. Final applicants required to register with Selective Service must show proof of registration (pursuant to Section 2.2-2804, Code of Virginia).
Submit a City application by 5:00 p.m. Thursday, September 30, 2004, to the Office of the Department of Human Resources, 2nd Floor, City Hall, P.O. Box 911,Charlottesville, VA 22902 0911. Applications must be received in Human Resources by the deadline stated (postmarks will not suffice as receipt). If you apply on-line, you must bring your confirmation to the test site. The written examination will be held October 2, 2004, 9:00a.m. at McLeod Hall (Nursing School), University of Virginia. Parking is available on site. Directions to McLeod Hall on the reverse of this posting. NO FURTHER NOTIFICATION OF THE WRITTEN TEST WILL BE MADE. This is the only testing date scheduled. There will be no make-up date. You should plan to check-in no later than 8:15a.m. as we expect a large turnout. Once the test has begun, we will close the doors and no one else will be admitted. There will be no exceptions to this rule, therefore, you should allow plenty of time to find the school. You will be allotted 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete the examination. A study guide will be distributed on site on the test date prior to the examination.

From Northern Virginia
Take U.S. Route 29 South into Charlottesville. At the exit- By-pass 29 South and Route 250 West- go straight. Route 29 South Business now becomes Emmet Street. Continue on Emmet Street for about 3 miles to where the road forks. Bear left and continue straight through the traffic light; the street is now called Jefferson Park Avenue. Go 4 blocks *Turn right onto Lane Road, which is the last road on the right immediately before going under the overhead glass-walled building (Health Sciences Library). Turn right onto 15th Street. McLeod Hall is the five-story brick building on the left.
From Richmond, Virginia
Route I-95 to I-64 West. Exit onto Route 29 North. Take the first exit off Route 29 North (follow the blue hospital signs). Turn right at the bottom of the ramp onto Fontaine Avenue. Go about 1 mile to a traffic light approximately 1 mile to point where road forks. Bear right at the traffic light (road is still Jefferson Park Avenue). Go about ½ mile (see * above).
From I-81
